A mechanic in a cap and gloves uses an impact wrench to work on a car tire.

It’s happened to all of us. We’re driving along and suddenly we hear a loud noise followed by the feeling that we’re driving on wobbly wheels. Our first instinct is usually to pull over and take a look at the tires. When it comes to car maintenance, one of the most important things you can do is keep your tires in good condition. Not only does this make your car safer to drive, but it also helps improve fuel efficiency. But what should you do when your tires are damaged? Should you repair them or replace them?

In this blog post, we are going to discuss when to replace and when to repair tires, so that you can make the best decision for your vehicle.

When To Repair Tires?

  • If the damage to your tire is minor, such as a small cut or a hole that’s less than an inch wide, you can repair it. All you need is some vulcanizing rubber and an air compressor. Simply use the rubber to patch up the hole and inflate the tire to its recommended pressure.
  • A puncture is usually repairable when it’s confined to the center of the tread area. If there’s damage to the sidewalls, you might need to get your tires replaced. The damage to the sidewall usually gets worse when you drive the car. It becomes bigger hence getting it replaced is the best choice.
  • If you see any evidence of alloy leakage on the tires, have your car towed to a service station for repair.

When To Replace Tires?

The location of the puncture and the amount of the damage are frequently the deciding factors in whether you should replace the tire or not:

  • If the damage to your tire is more extensive – such as a large cut, tear, or bulge – then it’s time for a replacement.
  • The same goes if your tires are more than six years old (or have over 60,000 miles on them). Even if the damage doesn’t seem that bad, it’s always best to replace the tires with new ones.
  • Moreover, if you see a bent or rusted wheel, it needs immediate replacement.
  • If the sidewall of the tires is cracked, it’s not safe to repair and requires replacement.

Now, it will be easier for you to find out whether your tire is beyond repair or you can do something to repair it.
